Fishing

Dumfries and Galloway has everything to offer the angler. As well as sea fishing the region has five well known game fishing rivers starting from the East with the Border Esk, then comes the Annan, the Nith, the Urr, the Cree, a delightful river to fish with the fly and only a short walk from Rowallan Guest House and finally the Bladnoch being the most Westerly. All are well known for fighting sea-bass and impressive runs of salmon. Surrounding Newton Stewart there are a wonderful variety of trout waters and many lochs, some renowned for their spectacular pike, providing coarse fishing throughout the year. Permits are available locally.

Wigtown - Book Town

Only six miles from Newton Stewart lies Wigtown which is now Scotland's National Book Town. This high profile role has played an important part in the town's recent growth. There is an annual book fair, book festivals, readings, live events and over 18 book related businesses including book shops, publishers, dealers and binders.

Walking

Newton Stewart has magnificent opportunities for hiking. There are 24 named peaks above 2000 feet in this part of Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland, the highest of which are Cairnsmore of Fleet at 711m and The Merrick at 843m. On a clear day there are wonderful views as far a field as England, Ireland and the Isle of Man. Ordnance survey maps (1 : 25,000) and guides for the area are available and all walkers are advised to take normal precautions against the weather and to notify your hosts of your proposed route(s) before setting out.

This part of South West Scotland in Dumfries and Galloway is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and the influence of the Gulf Stream provides a warm micro climate not found in many other parts of the United Kingdom. Bladnoch Distillery

The Bladnoch Distillery is Scotland's most southerly single malt whisky distillery, completed in 1817 by the McClelland brothers and is easily accessed from Rowallan Guest House, bed and breakfast and is only 7 miles away, via the A 714. Built out of fine stone and slate the original stonemasons skills are still on display today. Bladnoch offers guided tours, a visitor’s centre and a gift shop.

Creetown Gem Rock Museum

No more than 6 miles from Rowallan Guest House, bed and breakfast is the Creetown Gem Rock Museum, regarded as one in the finest privet collections of gem stones, crystals, minerals, rock and fossils in Great Britain. The museum is more than just a static display, it is a fully interactive experience with lots of things to do as well as to see.

Field Sports

Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland can offer rough or driven shooting for pheasant, duck, snipe, grouse, rabbit and hare, pigeon, woodcock or black game as well as duck and goose flighting or clay pigeon shooting. Stalking over wild moor, mountain or forest for fallow, roe or red deer, Rowallan Guest House, bed and breakfast offers you an ideal base, with gun cabinets and drying facilities. Bird Watching

Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland has magnificent opportunities for bird watching. The region offers such a range of habitats that there is good birdwatching in evey season. The Red Kite Trail can be easily accessed from Rowallan.

Mountain Biking

Rowallan is the ideal base for cyclists to explore some of the regions richest and most diverse landscapes. From the town center there are four colour coded routes of varying lengths to suit all comers. The area has undulating, meandering, quiet country roads and offers outstanding natural beauty.

For off road and mountain biking in the Galloway National Forest the Glentrool and Kirroughtree Visitors Centres are a good starting point. The 7 Stanes trails are internationally renowned and very popular.
